Learn something new, and make it your own.

Come learn a new skill, or return to something you’ve always loved. Workshops at Patchwork are about more than learning a skill —they’re about making alongside others. We host beginner-friendly classes and skill-building sessions across a range of fiber arts. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced maker curious about a new craft, each class is designed to be accessible, low-pressure, and fun!

People preparing for a craft or gift wrapping activity, with scissors, ribbons, photos, and holiday decorations on a wooden table.

Bring your project, find your people.

Our maker meet-ups are a space to settle in and create alongside others. Bring a project you’re working on, or the one that’s been sitting in your bag for weeks, and spend time stitching, chatting, and trading tips with fellow makers. It’s low-key, welcoming, and open to all levels.

Learn to Filet Crochet with Stichay
$40.00

Friday, June 19
6:00-8:30pm
4652 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90016

Learn the complete step-by-step process of how to filet crochet, from how to make a chart with your own design to making a finished piece.

Filet crochet is such a great technique that allows you to create fun motifs within your work. It can be used to add visual interest to your space through a wall hanging, a coaster, a table runner, or if you’re ambitious, you can use the technique to make an accessory or a garment.

In this class you will learn:

  • How to read filet crochet charts

  • How to make a filet crochet chart using Stitch Fiddle

  • Various methods to work up filet crochet

  • How to filet crochet

Materials Needed/Recommended* (Not Included):

  • 100% cotton yarn in lace, fingering, sport or light worsted weight

  • A crochet hook (1mm-4mm)

  • A phone, tablet or laptop to make your chart

*The type of yarn and hook size is important in filet crochet. Cotton in lace-light worsted weight is recommended because it allows you to see the motif the easiest, but you can work with the yarn type and size that you prefer, but expect some differences in how your work appears.

Skill Level: This class is recommended for experienced beginners to advanced crocheters. You should know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet.

Continental Knitting Workshop with Lindsay Anderson
$90.00

Saturday, June 20
3pm-6pm
4652 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90016

In this 3-hour workshop, we will learn how to knit and purl using the Continental style.

For crocheters who are struggling to bridge the distance between the crochet and knitting, this workshop may help! Continental knitting tensions yarn in the left hand and may feel more comfortable and intuitive for avid crocheters looking to master knitting.

For experienced English/throwing style knitters, learning to knit in the Continental style can add speed to your knitting and improve the drape of your fabric. Additionally, gaining mastery in Continental knitting can open the door to two-handed knitting techniques such as two-color brioche, doubleknitting colorwork, and fair isle knitting!

While covering the following topics, participants can expect to also learn how to maintain hand/wrist health.

Topics:

  • Casting on loosely in the Long Tail Cast On method

  • Left hand tensioning techniques for smooth control

  • Practice in knitting in Continental

  • Three methods for purling in Continental (including the elusive Norwegian Purl!)

  • Reading your knitting and counting rows for Garter Stitch and Stockinette Stitch

Skill level: Beginner in knitting in English/throwing style knitting or experienced crocheter. This is not a substitute for the “Learn to Knit” class offered through Patchwork.

Instructor: Lindsay Anderson

Materials Needed (Not Included):

  • Yarn - Any worsted weight yarn

  • Needles – US 6, US 7, or US 8; circular or straight needles are okay

  • Materials for taking notes

June 24, July 1, July 8 — 6-9pm

Create a one-of-a-kind patchwork curtain panel inspired by traditional Korean bojagi textiles in this three-week beginner-friendly sewing series. Together, we’ll explore jogakbo — a style of bojagi created by piecing together small fabric remnants into organic, light-filled compositions that resemble stained glass when hung in the window.

Students will learn foundational machine sewing techniques while constructing their own curtain panel using machine-sewn ssamsol (flat-felled) seams, the distinctive reversible seam finish traditionally used in bojagi construction. Along the way, we’ll cover seam finishing, pressing techniques, patchwork composition, and textile assembly in a supportive small-group environment.

Materials: All materials, sewing machines, and tools are included. However, if you have specific cotton or linen fabrics you are wanting to incorporate into your piece, feel free to bring them with you.

Skill Level: All levels are welcome. No prior sewing experience is necessary.

What You’ll Make: One 20” x 30” bojagi café curtain panel.

The three sessions will be broken down as follows:

Week 1: Design & Foundations
Learn machine sewing basics, explore and practice ssamsol flat-felled seams, and begin planning your curtain design through fabric layout and composition.

Week 2: Piecing the Panel
Cut fabric and begin constructing your curtain. Focus on accurate piecing and seam construction as your design takes shape.

Week 3: Finish & Assemble
Complete the panel, refine seams and edges, press, and finish your curtain for hanging and display.

We’ll start from the very beginning — learning how to split embroidery thread, thread a needle, and get comfortable handling materials — before practicing a handful of foundational stitches using a take-home stitch sampler worksheet. From there, you’ll sketch your own simple design onto a small embroidery hoop and use the stitches you’ve learned to create a one-of-a-kind piece of hand-stitched art.

At the end of class, you’ll also learn how to neatly finish the back of your embroidery using felt, so your piece is ready to display or gift.

All materials are included, including:

Don’t Frog It, Fix It!: A "Sweater Surgery" Series with Lindsay Anderson
$120.00

Thursdays, June 11 & 18 (2-part series)
6:30-8:30pm
4652 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90016

In this 2-part workshop, we will learn to identify and correct some of the most common knitting errors when making garments, which instructor Lindsay jokingly calls “Sweater Surgery.” Learning how to knit is great and all, but what do you do if things go wrong??

When it comes to knitting, I have two prevailing philosophies. 1. Even as an experienced knitter, I still make mistakes in my knitting. The only difference between me and a beginner is the ability to understand how I made the mistake and taking the time to fix it. 2. I will do everything in my power to avoid frogging and restarting my project (again!).

The first portion of this workshop is information/demonstration heavy and will include the topics listed below. Attendees will learn a lot in this workshop! The second portion of the workshop will give attendees some time to tackle correcting their own knitting issues - so please bring in a project that you have found an error in!

Topics:

  • Dropped stitch

  • Accidental short rows

  • Accidental yarn overs

  • Uneven fabric tension/fixing elongated stitches

  • Twisted stitches

  • “Tinking” (unknitting)

  • Using lifelines and adding lifelines

  • Laddering down

Skill level: Beginner knitting (& beyond!)

When: Thursdays, June 11 & 18 from 6:30-8:30pm

Instructor: Lindsay Anderson

Materials to Bring:

  • Materials for taking notes

  • Optional: Bring in a project that has an issue that needs fixing

    • Your project (any yarn weight, any size needle)

    • A crochet hook that is the same/similar size millimeter as your knitting needles

    • Interchangeable needle kit OR a tapestry needle and scrap yarn
